Participants in the first Dutch EU-Universe Awareness workshop visit ASTRON in Dwingeloo, the Netherlands
11 October 2011

Following the successful Dutch EU-UNAWE workshop for primary school teachers in Groningen last June, the enthusiastic teachers visited ASTRON in Dwingeloo on 28 September. During a beautiful sunny day they listened breathlessly to a very passionate talk by the astronomer Roy Smits and learned about the important and famous role the Netherlands plays in radio astronomy. The 15 teachers also had a tour of the cutting-edge laboratory and a peek into the control room of the Westerbork and LOFAR Telescopes. Finally, the CAMRAS Foundation – responsible for the restoration of the 'old' radio telescope in Dwingeloo – gave the teachers the opportunity to hear a real pulsar. The combination of lectures, hands-on activities and visits to top research institutes is an excellent way to motivate teachers and introduce them to the different aspects of astronomy.
