Universe Awareness was responsible for the outreach part of the International SKA Forum (ISKAF 2010) that took place in the Netherlands in June 2010.
With partners Megan Argo from the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research in Australia, Kevin Govender from the South African Astronomical Observatory, Daphne Lekgwathi from the South African SKA Project in South Africa, Frederiek Westra van Holthe from UNAWE Netherlands and Femke Boekhorst from ASTRON, UNAWE organised a three-way live dialogue between school children in those three countries. It was preceded by an astronomy workshop and followed-up with the distribution of a large number of inflatable Earthballs, an inspiring educational resource adopted by UNAWE.
The activity was presented at the Forum on a stage shared with ministers and funding agencies. It is now featured in the report of the event, the ISKAF 2010 brochure.
We quote: In Ödman’s heart-warming movie, school children in the Netherlands, South Africa and Australia shared stories, songs and details about their daily lives over the Internet, using video conference tools. “Like nothing else, astronomy provides a unique and profound perspective on our place in the world,” says Ödman. By focusing on underprivileged children, Universe Awareness hopes to reduce existing gaps in wealth, health and education.
